How to Pick the Perfect Red Lipstick

Red lipstick is an absolute staple in any holiday look but how do you choose the right? “I love red lipstick but it never looks right on me” - does that sound like you? I’ve met so many beautiful ladies that shy away from red lipstick because they just can’t seem to find the right tone.

There are thousands of lipsticks to choose from but most red shades are broken down into blue-red, orange-red and neutral red. Of course, each of these types of lipsticks also come in lighter and darker shades.

Figuring Out Your Undertone

Do you know what your skin undertone is? Here are some tips on how to figure out your undertone:

  1. Look down at your wrist, do your veins look blue? Do you tend to lean towards wearing silver jewelry? Do you burn easily in the sun? If you answered yes to these questions, you have a cool undertone.

  2. Do your veins look green? Do you prefer gold jewelry? Do you get a golden tan easily? If yes, you have a warm or olive undertone.

  3. Do you veins show up as a little blue and a little green? If you get a sunburn, does it turn into a tan? Do you like to wear silver and gold jewelry? If yes, you likely have a neutral undertone.

Cool Undertones

Those with a cool undertone look best with blue-red lipstick. Fair skin with a cool undertone looks best with lighter pinky tones. Deep complexions look stunning with intense reds with a blue undertone (think wine and berry shades).

Warm Undertones

Those with a warm or olive undertone look best with orange-red lipstick. Fair or Light skin with a warm undertone looks amazing with a bright orange lip. Deeper skin tones with a warm undertone look incredible with more brick-red or darker orange shades.

Those with a neutral undertone look best with blue-red or orange-red lipstick. Lucky you! Your undertone can be matched with either blue-toned or orange-toned red lipsticks. If you’re looking for a bold look, try a bright orange-based red. For a more natural look, choose a shade that is cooler (or more blue) in tone. There are lots of incredible neutral shade lipsticks that will suit your neutral undertone too!
